Plymouth, Ma. is America's hometown. Most well known for being the town where the Mayflower landed, this South Shore hub is now a tourist mecca for people that come from all over the country to see the replica of the Mayflower, Plimouth Plantation, and Plymouth Rock. Plymouth is the 3rd largest town in terms of population in Ma. and the largest in terms of size.
Plymouth was the 2nd settlement in the United States after Jamestown, Va. and the first in New England. Established in 1620, the "pilgrims" left England as Separatists to escape the Church of England during the Protestant Reform. Upon landing in Plymouth in December, the Pilgrims spent the next year learning from the local Indians how to cultivate food for their survival culminating in the Thanksgiving feast. In more recent history, Plymouth has been a major shipbuilding and fish town, and has experienced a booming population in the last 30 years as the South Shore has continued to expand.
